"Relcom, short for Reliable Communications, is the first Soviet and Russian computer network, the creation of which is commonly associated with the emergence of the Internet in the USSR and the subsequent emergence of the so-called Runet.

The Relcom network started operating in the summer of 1990 on the basis of the Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy. Kurchatov Institute in Moscow, connecting, with the help of analog telephone modems (for UUCP e-mail transmission), computers in scientific institutions in Moscow, Leningrad and Novosibirsk. It operated in conjunction with the Demos Programming Cooperative (which soon became the first Russian Internet service provider). On August 28, 1990, the first foreign computer connection was established at the University of Helsinki. On September 19 of the same year Relcom and Demos registered a .su top-level domain for the USSR. A regular exchange of information began (mainly through Usenet conferences), and new Soviet cities joined the network. In August 1991, Relcom network, which by that time had joined the European EUnet, was freely used to inform the world public about the "August Putsch" against the background of the information blockade of the Soviet media. On June 1, 1992 the Relcom Joint-Stock Company was created; its founders were: Kurchatov Institute RSC, RTSB, Rinaco, Technobank and a number of other organizations. The Board of Directors and the Management Board consisted of specialists in the field of science, informatics, and business. At present, RELCOM operates as a communications operator, providing services for commercial and state enterprises, as well as for individuals. The Company has two modern data centers and its own fiber-optic network with points of presence at the main telecommunications hubs in Moscow. The company's specialists are actively working on the creation and use of the latest technologies in cloud computing and data transmission. |
